COMMUNITY SERVICE
Sun Country Iris Society has two ongoing community projects:
SOJOURNER CENTER
The Sojourner Center is a shelter that provides a safe haven for up to 30 women and
children fleeing domestic violence. It has been part of the Phoenix family since 1977.
Every Christmas SCIS collects and donates gifts for the women and children at the center
in order to make their holiday season more joyous.
All through the year and especially at holiday season, please think about picking up something for a
child or woman who is probably very needy this year. Little packages of toiletries and
cosmetics, clothes, or a new toy would be welcome.
If you want to participate in this year's collection, please bring your contribution to the
December meeting. It does not have to be wrapped, but if you do wrap the gift, please put a
note on the package stating what the gift is so the shelter's volunteers can give it to the
right woman or child.
All donations will be delivered on Saturday, December . This is the Saturday following
our December Potluck meeting. If you have a donation, but are unable to attend the meeting,
please contact a Board Member who will be glad to arrange pick up of the item.
GARDENING ANGELS
August and September of every year is the time SCIS members are digging up and dividing many
of their iris rhizomes. Many of these rhizomes are unknown varities. The SCIS Gardening
Angels collect these unknown iris and donate them to several community projects.
In 2003, SCIS donated over 500 iris rhizomes. Approximately 80 of these rhizomes went to
LynnAlison Martin and her grade school students to be planted at the school. Lorna Corlett
took approximately 50 rhizomes for a similar school project.
The remainder of the unknown iris were donated to
Make a Difference, a Phoenix organization that coordinates volunteer help for
many Phoenix area community projects. Our unknown iris are going to be planted at a
variety of shelters throughout the valley.
If you know of an organization that would like to receive donations of unknown iris rhizomes,
please contact Nancy Burnett at
burkeburnett@juno.com .
